Responsibility for climate, energy, and social security is not distributed equally. Global data show that the wealthiest groups have a disproportionately large impact on greenhouse gas emissions and resource consumption. According to Oxfam, the richest 1% of the world’s population accounted for 16% of global consumption-based emissions in 2019, while the wealthiest 10% were responsible for half of all such emissions.

Mission Possible believes that a just transition requires a fair distribution of responsibility. It is neither reasonable nor equitable to expect the same level of sacrifice from households struggling with energy poverty as from individuals whose lifestyles, investments, or accumulated wealth generate a significantly larger environmental footprint.

The role of the wealthiest should include a greater contribution to financing the transition, investing in solutions that strengthen collective resilience and security, reducing high-emission patterns of consumption, and supporting the communities that bear the social and economic costs of change. Only through shared responsibility can the transition be both effective and fair.
